Home Care Assistance Partners With Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles to Bring Memories in the Making Program into the Home
New partnership will bring fine arts classes to the homes of those with dementia for the first time
(Los Angeles, CA – January 9, 2017) — Those living with dementia can now have fine art classes in the comfort of their home thanks to a new partnership between Home Care Assistance, North America’s leading provider of in-home care for seniors, and Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles. Home Care Assistance care teams, including the highly trained and credentialed experts who coordinate services for seniors and their families, will now be able to incorporate the organization’s distinguished art program, Memories in the Making, into customized care for clients with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles’ Memories in the Making program is a unique art program designed to allow those with dementia to express themselves emotionally and create meaningful connections through painting. Since verbal communication is often limited, art gives those with dementia a way to communicate nonverbally. Art also stimulates the brain and provides a way for those with dementia to either access lost memories or focus on being more present.
“Art is such a beautiful landscape for creativity. Art, in all its forms, has the potential to unlock deep memory for those experiencing cognitive decline,” says Jonna Hernandez, Regional Director of Business Development for Southern California of Home Care Assistance. “Memories in the Making is an incredible program to not only give those with dementia the opportunity to paint their thoughts, emotions and memories, but to also provide their family with a tangible piece of their creative memory.”
This partnership will mark the first time Memories in the Making is available one-on-one in the home setting. This program will be offered throughout the entire Los Angeles and Inland Empire regions. Home Care Assistance caregivers will be trained in the program and facilitate customized classes for those with dementia in their own home to help them stay engaged, connect with their memories and emotions in new ways, and explore new creative outlets.
“We are excited to partner with Home Care Assistance to extend access to Memories in the Making,” said Lorena Salazar, Director of Clinical Outreach for Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles. “While we have more than 50 Memories in the Making sites throughout Greater Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, our relationship with Home Care Assistance allows those who otherwise may not be able to attend in person to enjoy the therapeutic effects of art in their home and have a new avenue for connecting with family members.”
