Home Care Assistance Partners with the New Century Hospice to Host Educational Series on Alzheimer’s and Other Forms of Dementia

The three-part educational series will cover the types and stages of dementia, practical ways to address behavioral changes associated with dementia and how to communicate with someone with dementia (Colorado Springs, CO – January 17, 2017) Home Care Assistance of El Paso County, a leading provider of in-home care for seniors, is dedicated to partnering with other community members in an effort to increase awareness around longevity and aging. In line with this commitment to community education and the company’s expertise in quality dementia care, Home Care Assistance of El Paso County is partnering with representatives from the New Century Hospice to host a free, three-part public panel on Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The series, “Who is that in the mirror?” will be held at the Home Care Assistance office from 9:30 AM to 12:00 noon on January 21st, February 18th and March 18th. The first presentation will focus on the different forms of dementia, the second presentation will cover practical tips for managing behavioral changes and the last presentation will cover effective communication techniques. Each session will also have a discussion on care options in the Colorado Springs community. Sheryl Scheuer from New Century Hospice, a certified Positive Approach to CareTM trainer, and Dorothy Silvanic from Home Care Assistance will present the series. More than six million people are living with Alzheimer’s in the United States and Canada alone, and this number is expected to more than double by 2050. With over 40 percent of Home Care Assistance clients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, the company has produced a number of resources including specialized caregiver trainings through Home Care Assistance University, various printed resources and public webinars for those caring for someone with dementia and a cognitive intervention program designed to improve quality of life and delay the progression of dementia-related symptoms. The fifth book in the company’s award-winning, healthy longevity book series, Mind Over Grey Matter: A New Approach to Dementia Care, offers practical guidance on caring for an individual with dementia as well as evidence-based techniques to improve quality of life. By being proactive and identifying potential problems that dementia sufferers may encounter, caregivers can better provide for their safety and wellbeing. “I believe it is our responsibility to share the wealth of knowledge that Home Care Assistance has with the community,” said Mark Silvanic, Owner of Home Care Assistance of El Paso county. “Dementia is one of the most significant long-term health challenges we face. Providing public education to reduce caregiver burnout and improve quality of life is clearly in line with our mission to change the way the world ages.” For more information about Home Care Assistance’s superior in-home care services visit or call 719-822-1229.
