If you are a person with a passion for helping others, you may have a tendency to forget about taking care of yourself. Remember, if you don’t take care of yourself, you eventually won’t be able to take care of someone else. Here are four easy tips to prevent injuries and be able to continue to take care of your patients, clients, family and friends.
- Ask for Help. If you find a task is too hard for you to do on your own, don’t do it alone!
- Use Proper Ergonomics. It is best to take refresher courses at least once per year on proper techniques such as lifting with your legs, keeping objects you are carrying close to your body, using lift belts, etc. Free online courses are also available at cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2015-102/default.html
- Eat, Exercise, and Sleep! Caregivers usually have a hard time shutting off their need to help others, putting their own bodies on the backburner. Remember to follow your own advice. Eat something healthy every 3-4 hours. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Get 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Doing these things will help you feel better, improve your immune system, and allow you to care for others without complications.
- Get Checked! See your local chiropractor, nutritionist, massage therapist, acupuncturist, etc. Even if you don’t have an injury, it is important to make sure that your body is functioning at 100%.
