Home Care Assistance Informs Seniors on Safe Driving in Winter Weather
Colorado’s premier in-home care agency offers tips on how to prepare your car and drive safely in the harsh winter conditions
(Centennial, CO – December 12, 2014) – Home Care Assistance, Colorado’s premier provider of in-home care for seniors, shares some helpful tips for seniors on how to prepare their cars to ensure safe driving through the winter months and snowy conditions. It’s predicted that this winter will be colder and wetter than years past, with above average snowfall. Weather forecasters are keeping watch of El Niño and the Southern Jet Stream, as both can have a significant impact on Denver’s weather. Seniors, in particular, need to be prepared, as they are more susceptible to harsh weather conditions. To this end, Home Care Assistance is offering some practical tips to seniors who may be behind the wheel this winter.
“Weather conditions in Colorado can change at a moment’s notice, so it is important that drivers are always prepared for inclement weather,” says Pete Lane, Owner of Home Care Assistance of Centennial. “Winter weather can prove difficult to drive in for people of all ages, and we hope these tips increase the safety on the roads this season.”
The key to safe driving is visibility, and it is particularly important for seniors to ensure that all lines of vision are unobstructed. To keep the front windshield clear, there should be plenty of windshield washer fluid in the reservoir. It is prudent to carry additional fluid in the trunk as an extra precaution. The windshield can also be cleaned by applying rubbing alcohol, which is said to eliminate streaks and make the front window perfectly see-through. When it comes to nighttime driving, rubbing car wax on the headlights is another trick that can keep the lights bright and free from build-up for up to six weeks.
Cold and wet weather can cause ice to form on car windows, obstructing visibility. A solution of three-parts vinegar and one-part water can be sprayed on the front windshield and left overnight as a cost-effective way to ice-proof windows. This not only clears up visibility when driving, but it can also put much less strain on seniors, who won’t have to endure trying to scrape the ice off their car windows every morning. Another convenient tip for seniors is to use shaving cream to defog windows. By simply spraying the shaving cream on the inside of one’s windshield and then wiping it off with paper towels just prior to driving, windows will stay fog-free. Many ingredients found in shaving cream can also be found in defoggers.
The Colorado Department of Transportation recommends that drivers are always prepared for bad weather by keeping supplies in their car. They recommend that drivers have a scraper, snow brush, coat, hat, gloves, blanket, first aid kit, flashlight, tire chains, matches and nonperishable food in the car. It is also important that car tires have good tread and are properly inflated.
