With winter right around the corner, it’s time to start bundling up and getting adequate rest to ward off illness. While winter is a wonderful time with the holidays and gatherings of friends and family, it also marks the beginning of flu season. No one wants to be around someone who is sick, especially if they are a senior, so what precautions can be taken to prevent this from happening?
One solution is to visit your local grocery store or pharmacy and get a fly shot. While it is not guaranteed the fly shot prevents illness, “research has suggested that getting the shot decreases an older person's chances of being hospitalized for pneumonia.”
It is imperative that senior care is taken into account during the winter months as the likelihood of him or her developing a cold is higher. Furthermore, there is a new vaccination called the Fluzone High-Dose which will soon be readily available nationwide. It is a 4x dose of the flu vaccination, which has a much higher success rate, especially for seniors. As the body ages so does the immune system, making it more susceptible to ailments.
