Home Care Assistance developed The Balanced Care Method™, a holistic approach to care, based on studies of centenarians from Okinawa, Japan. Okinawans commonly lead longer and healthier lives, with lifespans averaging over 100 years. Their healthy longevity can be attributed in part to healthy lifestyle behaviors. The Method seeks to capture some of these lifestyle factors that contribute to healthy longevity, promoting healthy diet, physical activity, mental stimulation, socialization, calm and a sense of purpose. Our caregivers are trained in the Method to support independence and quality of life in our clients. We are excited to see the positive impact this unique approach offers and how it is changing lives for the better.
Larry, a client of Home Care Assistance in Sarasota, Florida, is a perfect example of someone who has benefitted from the Balanced Care Method. A lifelong athlete, he began running in high school and has since participated in 28 marathons across the United States. About six months ago, Larry had surgery, which left him in a wheelchair. Knowing his passion for running and an active lifestyle, Larry’s caregivers, Kathy and Billie, were determined to help him get back on his feet. Using the tenets of the Balanced Care Method, they assisted him in light physical activity while conversing on some of his favorite topics – football and business. With the caregivers’ compassionate support and encouragement, Larry soon replaced his wheelchair with a walker.
Billie and Kathy didn’t stop there. Kathy began walking with Larry two to three times a week. Three months later, Larry was able to walk without any assistive devices. But what’s truly impressive is that 67-year old Larry ran a 5k in early November with Home Care Assistance employees and his daughter! It’s stories like this that give us hope that we are truly changing the way the world ages by ensuring our clients are as happy, healthy and independent as possible.
