Foods that Lower Your Blood Pressure

blood-pressureAs we age, our blood vessels become more rigid, increasing the likelihood of developing high blood pressure. High blood pressure (HBP) is a serious condition that can lead to coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure and other health problems. Most of the time there are no symptoms associated with high blood pressure, which is why it can be especially deadly given that there are no warning signs until it’s too late. However, one of the easiest ways to lower your blood pressure is through healthy dietary choices. Here are a few foods that can help lower blood pressure:

  1. Celery. This vegetable contains chemical compounds that relax the muscle tissue in the artery walls, raising blood flow and lowering blood pressure at the same time.
  2. Black beans. The high fiber-to-protein ratio in these beans help keep artery walls healthy due to their ability to retain lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
  3. Whole-grain oats. Oats contain fiber and magnesium, both which help to lower an individual’s blood pressure.
  4. Omega-3s. The anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats found in cold-water fish not only lower blood pressure, but can help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

As we grow older it is inevitable that our artery walls will become less elastic. However, with the right diet you can slow down this process and keep your blood pressure in check.
